When it comes to electricity, you don’t want to mess around. Even a simple project, like swapping out an electrical switch, could create a massive headache if it’s installed incorrectly. The City of Seattle has adopted the Seattle Electrical Code to ensure electrical wiring, outlets, and anything related, is safe.

The code governs all things electrical. From electrical installations to circuit breakers and more, the code helps keep everyone safe.

What Is the Seattle Electrical Code?

The Seattle Electrical Code sets the minimum standards for all electrical projects in Seattle and is based on the National Electrical Code (NEC). The NEC is updated every three years, with Seattle adopting the pertinent information as it comes out.

These standards are in place to protect people from harm and prevent property damage. It applies to all electrical wiring and equipment in Seattle.

The code governs the construction and installation of electrical projects and sets the standard where electrical wiring can be installed and the operation of electrical systems. However, it doesn’t include design specifications or installation instructions.

Who Can Perform Electrical Work in Seattle?

Electrical Contractors must hold a license to do electrical work in Seattle. Only licensed electricians and trainees can perform the work. Homeowners may do electrical work on their own property. For example replacing a light fixture, adding a dimmer, or running wire. Larger jobs will require expertise and knowledge of the electrical code.

Permitting and Approval Process

Nearly all electrical projects require an electrical permit. Seattle maintains a list of common projects that require electrical permits. Examples include installing a new electrical panel, upgrading existing wiring, installing an EV charger in Seattle) and knob & tube rewires.

Most permits are issued the same day unless your permit requires a plan review. In those cases, it may take a few weeks. Mirsky Electric helps make this process seamless for our clients.

You’ll also have to pay a permit fee. These fees vary depending on your electrical project.

General Requirements

In broad strokes, all electrical systems in Seattle must meet the Code’s requirements. This includes:

  • Using equipment and materials that are approved by a recognized testing lab
  • Designing and installing systems that meet energy efficiency and renewable energy requirements
  • Installing safe and accessible systems

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Requirements

As part of its commitment to the environment, Seattle also has an Energy Code to ensure new buildings are energy efficient and to help older buildings become energy efficient as they remodel and update. Though separate and distinct from the Seattle Electrical Code, electrical projects must meet certain Energy Code requirements. This includes:

  • The design must meet energy efficiency and renewable energy requirements.
  • Using energy-efficient lighting and power supplies
  • Incorporating energy-efficient materials and equipment.

Electrical Inspections and Testing

Most electrical permits require three inspections: cover, service, and final Find out more here: electrical inspections Also, it’s important to note that inspectors may also ensure you’re in compliance with the Washington Administrative Code.

Additional Resources

Seattle has a number of resources to ensure electrical systems comply with the code. The city offers training and education and makes previous versions of the code available.

The Bottom Line

The Seattle Electrical Code exists to ensure electrical systems are safe and comply with all regulations to ensure the safety of Seattle’s citizens and their property. Only a licensed professional should install electrical systems. We are here to help you when you need it.
